Like all Moroccan towns worthy of the name, Essaouira has its own ramparts. These were initially built by the Portuguese when the town was still known as Mogador. They were destroyed and rebuilt at the same time as the new town, transforming this enclave of fishermen into a royal port and commercial centre. Fans of the series Game of Thrones will recognise the setting for several episodes of season 3.

Essaouira also boasts a number of art galleries, where you can enjoy exhibitions by local artists or artists in residence in the city. A culturally rich town, Essaouira is above all a very popular meeting place for local artists. Anecdotally, Jimi Hendrix himself fell under the town’s spell in 1969.
